A Tree Inquiry

We can make observations!                             

We found a tree branch.
- "we think it is dead"
- "we see marks on the branch"
- "the marks feel bumpy"

We wonder:

- "How did the marks get on the tree branch?"

We can plan and investigate:  

- "we need to find out what kinds of animals walk on tree branches" 
- "we can find out what types of living things live in a tree" 

 Our New Learning:

- "insects live inside the tree's bark"
- "beetles bore paths in the tree's bark"

- "beetles lay eggs in the tree bark"                             "A beetle made this path!"

- "caterpillars live in trees and eat the tree leaves"

In class, we started to investigate parts of a tree.  

Our New Learning:
"trees have roots, a trunk, branches and leaves"
"there are many different kinds of trees and leaves"
"maple keys grow on maple trees"
"pine needles grow on a pine trees"
"apples grow on an apple tree"
"nuts grow on trees" "We found a horse chestnut and an acorn"
